Parametric rope design utilizes 3D modelling software to display the wires and strands on a monitor and enables the rope designer to visualize what the effects are of each design tweak that is made during the design process. If the software is set up correctly it is easy and quick to prepare a perfect rope design

Strand design with a large wire gap

The figure on the right shows an image of a strand drawn with a parametric design program. The wires are related through fixed constraints which allows a dimension to be changes and all other dimensions will be altered so that the constraint conditions are met.

The figure on the left shows a strand with a lay length of 70mm comprising a 3mm diameter king wire and a 2,4mm outer wire. The wire gap is shown as excessive.

The figure on the right shows the same strand with a lay length of just 30mm. the wire gap is significantly smaller. The ovallity of the wires at the cut plane is clearly visible for this short lay length.

This third figure describing parametric design shows the original strand but with the outer wire diameter increased to 3mm. The interference between the outer wires is quite obvious.
